Library Sale Haul

Hey y'all, I'm back from the library sale and it was pretty good. Most books I got were young adult! :) I got like four adult. So which should we start with first?

There are so many good choices, I guess I'll start with . . . . .

Forgive My Fins by Tera Lynn Childs

Blurb:

Lily Sanderson has a secret, and it's not that she has a huge crush on gorgeous swimming god Brody Bennett, who makes her heart beat flipper-fast. Unrequited love is hard enough when you're a normal teenage girl, but when you're half human, half mermaid, like Lily, there's no such thing as a simple crush.

Lily's mermaid identity is a secret that can't get out, since she's not just any mermaid—she's a Thalassinian princess. When Lily found out three years ago that her mother was actually a human, she finally realized why she didn't feel quite at home in Thalassinia, and she's been living on land and going to Seaview High School ever since, hoping to find where she truly belongs. Sure, land has its problems—like her obnoxious biker-boy neighbor, Quince Fletcher—but it has that one major perk: Brody. The problem is, mermaids aren't really the casual dating type—the instant they "bond," it's for life.

When Lily's attempt to win Brody's love leads to a tsunami-sized case of mistaken identity, she is in for a tidal wave of relationship drama, and she finds out, quick as a tailfin flick, that happily ever after never sails quite as smoothly as you planned.

And it's really not in such bad shape. It's actually brand new hardback! No writing on it or anything. The seller could have charged full price and got it! So I got a steal. :)

A Series of Unfortunate Events #10: Slippery Slope by Lemony Snicket
A Series of Unfortunate Events #10: The Slippery Slope

Blurb:

Like bad smells, uninvited weekend guests or very old eggs, there are some things that ought to be avoided.

Snicket's saga about the charming, intelligent, and grossly unlucky Baudelaire orphans continues to alarm its distressed and suspicious fans the world over. The 10th book in this outrageous publishing effort features more than the usual dose of distressing details, such as snow gnats, an organised troupe of youngsters, an evil villain with a dastardly plan, a secret headquarters and some dangerous antics you should not try at home. With the weather turning colder, this is one chilling book you would be better off withou
t.

Condition:
Actually, it's kinda funny. You know how you see kids like to stamp their books with stuff? This one has in it: Read This Stamp. No lie! Sometimes stamps aren't actually a bad thing. :) So other then that, this book is in perfect condition. It's a paperback.

The Return of the Indian by Lynne Reid Banks
The Return of the Indian (The Indian in the Cupboard)

Blurb:
A little over a year has passed since Omri's adventures with a cupboard that could magically bring plastic toys to life. Excited by a prize he won for a story about his adventures with the cupboard, Omri wants to share the news with Little Bear. His joy evaporates when he activates the cupboard and finds a critically wounded Little Bear. Omri and his friend Patrick find and bring to life a small plastic nurse who saves Little Bear, but the tiny Iroquois chief is determined to return to his village, which is under attack from the French. Unsure of what to do, the boys assemble an army of plastic Indians and equip them with modern machine guns.

The Indians are devastated, and Little Bear, depressed by his failure, withdraws until he learns of his new son and of Omri's successful story. This is a wonderful sequel, beautifully recreating the magic of the original while adding a darker thread of reality. Banks' rich style brings all of the characters to life. Readers experience the boys' delight in their creation as it is tempered by the realization that their casual actions are having drastic results on real people who have magically become living toys. Of course this is a fantastic situation, but Banks manages to validate it with her realistic details and believable emotions. Highly recommended for fantasy readers and adventure lovers, but be sure that they have read The Indian in the Cupboard (Doubleday, 1981) first.

I don't know about you guys, but this book brings back some great memories of the Indian in the Cupboard so as soon as I saw it, I was like, "Ohh! Grab time!" And grabbed that sucker. Even though I already have this book, I'm putting this book in the classroom library collection. So it gives me a great excuse to buy lots and lots of books. :) But um, anyway, it's a paperback book in great condition except for a tiny page rip. Which really isn't that bad. A Series of Unfortunate Series #12: The Penultimate Peril by Lemony Snicket

Blurb:

Lemony Snicket returns with the last book before the last book of his bestselling Series of Unfortunate Events. Scream and run away before the secrets of the series are revealed!

Very little is known about Lemony Snicket and A Series of Unfortunate Events. What we do know is contained in the following brief list:

o The books have inexplicably sold millions and millions of copies worldwide

o People in more than 40 countries are consumed by consuming Snicket

o The movie was as sad as the books, if not more so

o Like unrefrigerated butter and fungus, the popularity of these books keeps spreading

Even less is known about book the twelfth in this alarming phenomenon. What we do know is contained in the following brief list:

o In this book, things only get worse

o Count Olaf is still evil

o The Baudelaire orphans do not win a contest

o The title begins with the word, ′The′

Sometimes, ignorance is bliss.

Catherine, Called Birdy by Karen Cushman

Blurb:
This unusual book provides an insider's look at the life of Birdy, 14, the daughter of a minor English nobleman. The year is 1290 and the vehicle for storytelling is the girl's witty, irreverent diary. She looks with a clear and critical eye upon the world around her, telling of the people she knows and of the daily events in her small manor house. Much of Birdy's energy is consumed by avoiding the various suitors her father chooses for her to marry. She sends them all packing with assorted ruses until she is almost wed to an older, unattractive man she refers to as Shaggy Beard. In the process of telling the routines of her young life, Birdy lays before readers a feast of details about medieval England. The book is rich with information about the food, dress, religious beliefs, manners, health, medical practices, and sanitary habits (or lack thereof) of the people of her day.

From the number of fleas she kills in an evening to her herbal medicines laced with urine, Birdy reveals fascinating facts about her time period. A feminist far ahead of her time, she is both believable and lovable. A somewhat philosophical afterword discusses the mind set of medieval people and concludes with a list of books to consult for further information about the period.

Condition:
Now this paperback book is a different story. Library stickers on the outside and inside, spine needs some repairs, and a little bit of writing on the pages. Don't you hate that?! Ugh, I wish I could chop some fingers off when I see writing in books. Anyway, for the most part, these are things I can fix and put on my shelf. But for the price, I can handle it. :)

The Mystery of the Cupboard by Lynne Reid Banks
The Mystery of the Cupboard (Avon Camelot Books)

Blurb:
In this latest installment in the award-winning Indian in the Cupboard series, Omri's fascination with the little people of the cupboard has matured into an obsession with discovering the origin of their life-giving magic. With the help of his great-aunt's hidden diary and a meeting with an elderly roof-thatcher, Omri is able to piece together his own family's history--one that gave rise to the wondrous events of the last few years. In the process he takes a big risk in allowing the secret to be disclosed to an adult. Relying much less on the sheer derring-do typical of earlier episodes, Banks takes an introspective turn here, weaving a more adult story of disappointment and heartbreak into Omri's ever-widening understanding of the cupboard's mystery. Banks's series has grown up, and though some readers may miss the magical Peter Pan-like world of earlier installments, these rich, well-rounded characters speak eloquently and entertainingly within a polished mystery structure. While observing the parameters of a series, Banks demonstrates an impressive versatility, never swerving from her trademark disarming candor and unaffected yet elegant style.

Condition:
Ah, yes, another Lynne Reid Banks book! I found a bunch of them there. Especially paperbacks. That and Harry Potter books and one "hidden" New Moon book. Someone was def trying to hide it, but I uncovered it. But I def didn't get it, lol. I already gave all of those Stephenie Meyer books a while ago. Anyway, this book has a little bit of age. A little yellowing of the pages and the outside is a bit beat up, but still nothing that bothers me and unfixable. Oh, and it's a paperback.

The Secret of the Indian by Lynne Reid Banks
The Secret of the Indian (The Indian in the Cupboard)

Blurb:
In this sequel to The Indian in the Cupboard and The Return of the Indian , Omri and Patrick foil a burglary and are forced to share their secret of time travel; in PW 's words, "This fantasy-adventure is gracefully enhanced by a powerful concern for the care of all human beings."

A Series of Unfortunate Events #11: The Grim Grotto
A Series of Unfortunate Events #11: The Grim Grotto

Blurb:
It's tough when the things that stand between you and your desired sugar bowl are a host of deadly mushrooms and an uncomfortable diving suit. The unlucky Baudelaire orphans find themselves in deep (once again) in this eleventh book in Lemony Snicket's odd-and-full-of-woe-but-quite-funny Series of Unfortunate Events. In The Grim Grotto, the siblings find themselves headed down Stricken Stream on a broken toboggan when they are spotted by the submarine Queequeg, carrying Captain Widdershins, his somewhat volatile stepdaughter Fiona, and optimistic Phil from Lucky Smells Lumbermill. The adventures that follow as the crew tries to get to the aforementioned sugar bowl before Count Olaf are so horrible that the narrator inserts factual information about the water cycle so that readers will get bored and stop reading the book. It doesn't work. As per usual, readers will want to soak up every awf! ul detail and follow the Baudelaires all the way back to the place we first met them--Briny Beach.

Condition:
Now this hardback has stuff written ALL over this book. Like those pages he wrote on are ruined. Like he didn't just write a sentence. He wrote a WHOLE paragraphs on the first few pages. But luckily, from chapter one onward, it's still intact, but good God I want to get a hold of that kid and teach him how to properly take care of books. It's so sad and aggravating that kids write ALL over the books. But I can fix it. It'll take a LOT of work but it can be saved!

A Series of Unfortunate Series #3: The Wide Window
The Wide Window: Or, Disappearance! (A Series of Unfortunate Events, Book 3)

Blurb:

In The Bad Beginning, things, well, begin badly for the three Baudelaire orphans. And sadly, events only worsen in The Reptile Room. In the third in Lemony Snicket's Series of Unfortunate Events, there is still no hope on the horizon for these poor children. Their adventures are exciting and memorable, but, as the author points out, "exciting and memorable like being chased by a werewolf through a field of thorny bushes at midnight with nobody around to help you."

This story begins when the orphans are being escorted by the well-meaning Mr. Poe to yet another distant relative who has agreed to take them in since their parents were killed in a horrible fire. Aunt Josephine, their new guardian, is their second cousin's sister-in-law, and she is afraid of everything. Her house (perched precariously on a cliff above Lake Lachrymose) is freezing because she is afraid of the radiator exploding, she eats cold cucumber soup because she's afraid of the stove, and she doesn't answer the telephone due to potential electrocution dangers. Her greatest joy in life is grammar, however, and when it comes to the proper use of the English language, she is fearless.

But just when she should be the most fearful--when Count Olaf creeps his way back to find the Baudelaire orphans and steal their fortune--she somehow lets her guard down. Once again, it is up to Violet, Klaus, and Sunny to get themselves out of danger. Will they succeed? We haven't the stomach to tell you.

The teen knows that she needs to earn her keep, and, despite opposition from some of the townspeople, she is given the opportunity to take her father's place in the classroom.

She faces many challenges, including the schoolhouse, itself, an abandoned soddy; unruly children; and lack of confidence from many adults. In addition, Miss Kizer and Reverend Lauter, the traveling preacher, disapprove of her decision, seeing it as defiance of their authority. Despite these problems, Sarah proves that she is an exceptional teacher. This diary brings to life the problems and day-to-day activities of an educator while also providing a glimpse into life in Nebraska during the late 1880s.

Quizzed on-air about previously undisclosed details of the perplexing Starr case, Scarpetta realizes that the tentacles of the case reach further than she imagined. Her niece, forensic computer whiz Lucy Farinelli, has her own reasons for digging into Starr's disappearance, along with Lucy's girlfriend, New York County ADA Jaime Berger. NYPD Det. Pete Marino, another series staple, is also in the loop as a member of Berger's task force. But it's the dark past of Scarpetta's psychologist husband, Benton Wesley—particularly his presumed death in Point of Origin and shocking reappearance five years later in Blow Fly—that binds the disparate pieces together and make this one of Cornwell's stronger recent efforts.

  1. Hmm, nice choices. After watching the Percy Jackson movie and I could not finish it, I did not bother to read any of the novels, will you be reviewing it? Did you design your blog yourself, really cool. You should visit my blog sometime, I'll be posting chapters of an old/new less complex book I am re-working on for middle grade, and this time I am asking for only negative comments as well as positive. Thanks.

  2. Hey J.O. Jones! Thanks for visting and dropping me a comment.

I didn't particularly want to watch the Percy Jackson movie myself, but the book sounds interesting, and I didn't want to think about myself. These books are for my students. Therefore, I will read it for them, see if maybe somebody will like it, then place it on the shelf. Of course, checking to make sure it's appropriate and whatnot.

I'm not sure if I'll be reviewing the book or not. I guess when I get to it, I might but it just depends on my schedule which is about to explode in busy-ness. Between work and school, I don't know if I'll have time for it. But we shall see.

I'm still worried about your other novel, The Septavalent Stone. Did you hire an editor for it? I would be very interested in re-reviewing that novel, but other then that . . . *shrugs* Anyway, best of luck with everything!
